Selecting An Exercise Bike

With so many of us working office jobs where we sit for eight hours or more a day, health concerns are mounting, and many people are looking for ways to quickly and efficiently get a reasonable amount of exercise without spending a lot of money. When it comes to general health, physical trainers and doctors both agree that cardiovascular exercises are the single most effective type. Many people look to walking or jogging, which is great if they have the time and an area in which they feel comfortable doing so. Some look to treadmills instead, but treadmills only work the legs, which is not the most efficient way to get the blood moving, and those with back problems sometimes cannot tolerate regularly using a treadmill. Those who wish to get the most comprehensive workout possible in the shortest amount of time, and generally for a reasonable prices, purchase a fitness exercise bike.

There Are Various Types Of Exercise Bikes

There are many different types of exercise bikes available for purchase, and the ideal selection really depends on exactly what the user needs to accomplish. If the main goal is be able to sit down but still get a cardiovascular workout, then a recumbent exercise bike should be considered. Although they do not work the arms like some of the more expensive, upright exercise bikes, they are sometimes best for those with lower back problems. Some upright models have seats, allowing the user a place to rest their backside, while others do not, which allows the user to use gravity and their own body weight to their advantage. Some have fixed handles and some have moving handles, so that the user can exercise their arms at the same time as their legs. Exercise bikes also generally come with an electronic console that can range in sophistication from basic stopwatch functions to fully blown control and information center, with the ability to change incline and monitor everything from average speed to calories burned.

Try Before You Buy

Because exercise bikes come in so many different configurations, it is always a good idea to find a place where you can sit and briefly use the exercise bike before you buy it. If there is pain within the first few seconds, than that is not the bike for you. The entire purpose of an exercise bike is to be able to get a sustained workout. Unless a doctor or physical therapist has specifically told you otherwise, pain during a sustained workout is generally not healthy.
