Many people get their exercise through walking, either on paved or graveled trails provided by the city or taking a 2-mile brisk walk around their neighborhood. But the weather isn’t always conducive to this. Depending on where you live, the summers can get unbearably hot or the winters can be unbearably cold. But in order to bring your walk inside out of the elements, you don’t have to buy an expensive, gigantic motorized treadmill with several different incline levels. These monstrosities can do everything from taking your heart rate to yelling at you to go faster!
You can get a compact and efficient manual treadmill for a reasonable price that does just what you want it for –allow you to take your daily walk inside in the comfort of air conditioning or heat. Manual treadmills are fine if your goal is to get your daily exercise, trim some fat, and lose a little weight. In fact, manual treadmills are better for losing fat around the hips and abdomen than motorized treadmills. That’s because your walking motion is what gets the belt of the treadmill going. Your own body and your own muscles are driving the treadmill. When you get on a motorized treadmill and push the button, the motor does all the work. You just have to keep up.
Manual treadmills are exponentially cheaper, running anywhere from $125 to $300, than their motorized counterparts. A decent electronic machine starts around $750 and one with all the widgets and gadgets and voices can cost as much as $5000. Usually, the motorized versions that are under $1000 don’t have very powerful motors.
Many of the motorized treadmills can supposedly be folded down to slide under a bed, but in order to be folded and unfolded constantly, they are probably made pretty cheaply, and generally all the electronic features are the first to be affected by all of this manipulation. A manual treadmill is much smaller and easier to fold down and put out of sight. Manual treadmills have very few parts to break versus and electronic machine.
Admittedly, manual treadmills aren’t ideal for people who are extremely overweight and out of shape. The work that the body does to drive the belt can be hard on the joints of people who are large. But if you are in decent shape and are looking to trim a little fat and get your daily walk without worrying about the weather, a manual treadmill is probably perfect for you.
